Physician and philosopher Pedro Hispano (ca. 1205-1277), born Pedro Julião, was best known for having been Pope, the only Portuguese to occupy the pontifical throne, under the name João XXI.
He did his first studies in Lisbon, and then he studied in Paris.
Specialists have serious doubts about which works he actually wrote. These include the Summulae Logicales, which were used in the teaching of logic in several European universities until the middle of the 16th century.
Dante placed the Portuguese Pope in the paradise of the Divine Comedy. The work highlighted this month compiles the medical works of Pedro Hispano, here translated from Latin, edited and annotated by Professor Maria Helena da Rocha Pereira, constituting a reference edition.
