The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) has adapted to the new times and changes that the pandemic Covid-19 has forced us to face. Education was one of the sectors where innovation reigned. The journey requires us to move on and FMUL continues, day after day, to pursue its vision and build the future. It aims to consolidate the excellence of its medical training and provide health professionals with innovative means to improve their skills.
In view of this innovation, in April a new form of development of technical and leadership skills will start with the offer of the first of a set of online courses included in the brand image of the new Technological Medical Centre of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon. The first course, Operating Theatres Leadership and Perioperative Practice Management, focuses on acquiring skills to be a good leader.
This course is coordinated by Professor Luís Mendes Pedro, in partnership with the University of Cambridge. In Conversa Direta, he explained the main objectives of the course and its areas of expertise. During the interview, he also explained how he leads his teams on a day-to-day basis and reacts in decision making occasions.
Luís Mendes Pedro has a degree in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon completed in 1987, and a Ph.D. from the same institution completed in 2003. He is became a specialist in Angiology and Vascular Surgery at Santa Maria Hospital in 1997. In 2000, he successfully completed the European Board of Vascular Surgery exam and obtaining the title of Fellow of the European Board of Vascular Surgery (FEBS).
Currently, he is Associate Professor with Aggregation in the disciplines "Vascular Surgery" and "Introduction to Clinical Practice" of the FMUL Medical Degree, as well as in the discipline "Biomaterials Technology" of the Biomedical Engineering Degree (IST-FMUL); He is a Senior Graduate Assistant (Head of Service) at the Northern Lisbon University Hospital Centre; Director of the Vascular Surgery Service at the Northern Lisbon University Hospital Centre; Specialist in Vascular Surgery at Hospital da Luz Torres de Lisboa and Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery.
