Professor António Ismael Pratas Ferreira

It is with deep regret that we inform the entire FMUL Community of the passing of Professor António Ismael Pratas Ferreira, on 26 January 2021.

Retired Full Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at our Faculty, he graduated in Medicine in 1951, at FMUC, and did his Ph.D. in 1977 at FMUL, with the thesis “Contribution of celioscopy and per-celioscopic ovarian biopsy to the functional study of the ovary”.

Within the scope of his hospital career, the creation of the Multidisciplinary Reproduction Unit in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Service of the HSM stands out, and, in 1986, the birth, in that service, of the first Portuguese baby resulting from in vitro fertilization. The progress made with the development of contraception and assisted fertilization occupied a large part of his activity.

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon presents its condolences to the family and friends of Professor António Ismael Pratas Ferreira.
