Francisco da Fonseca Henriques (1665-1731) studied in Coimbra and completed his medical degree there in 1688.
He was the first Portuguese author to deal with our country's hydrological resources.
In his treatise, he writes about «... thermal waters, fountains, rivers, wells, ponds and cisterns of the kingdom of Portugal and of the Algarves, which, due to their medicinal properties, or any other singularity, are worth of being particular remembered».
He was the first to report the medicinal properties of Luso water. His works include Anchora Medicinal para Conservar a Vida com Saúde and Medicina Lusitana. His work is mentioned by several authors, in some cases much later. King D. João V later appointed him as additional doctor of the Royal Household. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences.
