12th “EDUCATION THROUGH SCIENCE” WORKSHOP
On the 10th of December last, at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) the 12th “Education through Science” Workshop was held, organised by the GAPIC and attended by about ninety participants, including students, teachers and researchers.
The opening session was attended by the Dean of the FMUL, Professor J. Fernandes e Fernandes, the President of the Scientific Council, Professor Rui Victorino, the Coordinator do GAPIC, Professor João Ferreira, and the President of the AEFML, Diogo Medina.
Twenty-four posters were presented and sixteen oral communications, all of high scientific quality, by the 53 students who carried out research projects during the 2008/2009 academic year within the scope of the 12th holding of the “Education through Science” programme at FMUL units, at the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) and at the Santa Maria Hospital (HSM). The best oral communication and the best poster received prizes, and these were for the student Ana Rita Gomes, with the communication “Determination of the role of transition factors subject to repression on the level of translation into Plasmodium berghei – the functions of AP2 factors during the sexual development of the parasite in the initial phase of the mosquito”, and the student Ding Zhang with the poster entitled “The Role of Re-innervation in the Regeneration of the Fin of the Zebra Fish”.
A moment of distinction in this event was the talk “Origin, Formation and Consolidation of the Lisbon Histology School” given by Professor David Ferreira, founder of the GAPIC.
There was also a session dedicated to the 4th Astrazeneca Foundation / FMUL Research Grant, where Dr. Sara Silva presented the project “Common Variable Immunodeficiency: Pathogenesis of Chronic Immunological Activation”, developed in the IMM Clinical Immunology and in the HSM Immunollergology Service.
This event, which was marked by the participation, dynamism and enthusiasm for scientific research shown by the medicine students, was possible with the support of the Merck Sharp & Dhome Foundation, AIDFM, IMM, Banco Espírito Santo (BES) and Formas Luso.
