Biographical note

António Gonçalves-Ferreira, MD neurosurgeon, consultant of the National Health Service, is Professor and Chairman of Anatomy since 1990 and Neurosurgery since 2014 at the Lisbon Faculty of Medicine (FMUL), Jubilee in 2022. Head of the Instituto de Anatomia since 1999 and of the Clínica Universitária de Neurocirurgia since 2014, he was responsible for the renewal of the Instituto de Anatomia of the FMUL and together with I. Alvares Furtado e L. Lucas Neto for the publication in 2020 of the book ANATOMIA HUMANA, Manual for Students. As neurosurgeon he founded in 1995 and was coordenator since then of the Functional Neurosurgery Unit and the Radiosurgery Unit of the HSM-CHULN. He is also consultant of the National Medico-Legal Institute since 1991 and member of the Medico-Legal Council since 2014.

President of the Portuguese Anatomical Association in 2008-09 and of the European Association of Clinical Anatomy in 2012-15, he was also President of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies Research Committee (EANS) in 2001-05 and of the Board of the Sociedad Española de Neurochirurgia Funcional (SENFE) in 2013-17. He is now President of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ESSFN 2018-2023), and Vice-President of the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (WSSFN 2018-23). He is still president of the General Assembly of the Alumni Association of the Lisbon Faculty of Medicine.
