Scholarships to support the cure of degenerative diseases such as Parkinson and Alzheimer
The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa will focus on research in the field of neuroscience.
The announcement was made in March by director Pedro Santana Lopes. There will be two separate scholarships, each in the amount of 200 000 euros, a total of de 400 000 euros, and they will be awarded annually.
One of the scholarships is aimed at supporting the treatment and cure of degenerative diseases associated with ageing, such as Parkinson and Alzheimer.
The other will fund innovative projects in the field of spinal injuries. The funds are coming from unclaimed prizes in games overseen by Santa Casa.
The opening of the tender for the 'Dr. José de Mello e Castro' scholarship – the promoter of the Alcoitão Centre – will be announced in April.
The tender for the other scholarship - 'Mantero Belard', in honour of this benefactor of Santa Casa, will open in the last quarter of 2013.
This initiative is supported by the Universities of Lisbon, Porto, and the Neuroscience Centre of Coimbra. The amount of each scholarship will be distributed in a phased manner over three years.
