The First Centre for Medical Simulation and Robotics is to be located at the Faculty of Medicine UL
The public ceremony to present the future Centre for Medical Simulation and Robotics, the first in Portugal, was held on 6 June last. The centre will be placed at the Câmara Pestana Building of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. The Faculty has established a partnership with a Portuguese company, EDC-MEDSIM, headquartered in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, and whose Chairman, Engineer João Mena Matos, was awarded the COTEC 2011 Prize - Innovative Entrepreneurship Award.
This prize will allow training health professionals using high technology in a virtual reality environment focusing the training of the medical team as a whole and paying particular attention to relational and behavioural aspects.
As stated by Professor José Fernandes e Fernandes, Director of FMUL, simulation is particularly important for medical teaching and learning, and its implementation has been a goal of the Board of the Faculty of Medicine (speech). Using virtual reality technology is a new step that enables more realistic training scenarios, thus contributing to the greater effectiveness of education.
The Centre for Medical Simulation and Robotics will allow physicians to test skills and all unforeseen medical emergencies using high-tech mannequins that simulate breathing, body temperature, and reaction to stimuli, like a human being lying on a stretcher during surgery.
The President of the Republic, Professor Cavaco Silva attended the ceremony as well as the Deputy Secretary of State for Health, Dr. Fernando Leal da Costa, the Rector of the UL, Professor António Sampaio da Nóvoa and Professor Daniel Bessa, from COTEC, were also present, among others.
