Terry Fox Grant awarded to IMM Researcher João Barata
The researcher João Barata, Director of the Unit of Cancer Biology of the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, was one of the winners of the Terry Fox grants.
The grants are awarded by the Embassy of Canada and by the Portuguese League against Cancer, and annually distinguish research projects in the area of cancer. This year 15 thousand Euros were attributed to each of the three winning projects.
João Barata’s project aims at studying the intra-cell alterations that contribute towards the progression of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), which is responsible for 25% of all paediatric cancers and 75% of leukaemias in small children.
Besides João Barata, from the IMM, two other projects received grants, one in basic science, dedicated to research into breast cancer, and a epidemiological Project presented by the Alentejo Regional Health Administration (ARS).
The funds for these grants are raised at the annual Terry Fox race. Since the beginning of the race in Portugal, in 1995, about 480 thousand Euros has been raised, financing 41 research projects in the field of cancer. The next race is on the 8th of May in the Parque das Nações in Lisbon, and is open to anyone interested.
