What is known about infection cases after full vaccination

Is it possible to suffer from serious illness even after getting vaccinated? This question was answered in the article published in Visão expressing the opinion of Miguel Prudêncio and Luís Graça, Professors at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) and researchers at the Instituto of Molecular Medicine (iMM).

The Directorate-General for Health revealed that of the approximately two million people with complete vaccination in Portugal, only 1231 were infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Five died. A new British study reveals the possible impact of the Delta variant on this equation.

In this article, Miguel Prudêncio states that “in the first fifteen days after the first dose of a vaccine, a person is practically as vulnerable to the disease as any other”.

Scientists are now studying whether the Delta variant, initially identified in India, could undermine the vaccine's protection against serious disease. Immunologist Luís Graça assures that "the data currently available do not show that there are more hospitalizations per number of infections, among the younger population, caused by the Delta variant, but we still don't have a sufficient follow-up time regarding this strain".
