Professor Ivo Furtado honored by SPEMD

In the coming days, 18 and 19 October 2019, will take place at the Vilar Seminar in Porto, the Centenary Congress of the oldest of the Scientific Societies of Medical Specialties in Portugal: The Portuguese Society of Stomatology and Dental Medicine (SPEMD).

To commemorate the anniversary of its 100th anniversary and to recall the remarkable actions of its contribution to the Society, both nationally and internationally, SPEMD decided to hold a commemorative session in honor of personalities who have distinguished themselves over the years in the service of the Company. Institution, for relevant services, including Professor Doctor Ivo Álvares Furtado, Full Professor of Medicine, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Madeira. There will be a conference given by Professor António de Vasconcelos Tavares, former President of SPEMD, who will speak in the name of the honorees.

Professor Ivo Álvares Furtado, 67, is a native of Goa, a doctor of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon (1975), having a long career shared by hospital activities at the University Hospital Center of Lisbon - North (1976 - 2019) and Teaching Anatomy at the Anatomy Institute of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, where he currently serves as a guest professor. He obtained the Degree of Specialist in Stomatology with distinction in 1985 and the Degree of Head of Service of Stomatology in 1992, having founded in 1986 the Consultation of Pediatric Stomatology of the Hospital of Santa Maria, where until recently (2019), performed Coordination of the Pediatric Stomatology Unit. Having been Assistant to the Higher Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Lisbon (now Faculty of Medical Sciences), between 1976 and 1978, he belonged to the group of founding professors of the current Egas Moniz University Institute (Almada). PhD in Medicine, in the Specialty of Anatomy with Distinction and Praise in 2008 and successfully passed the Aggregation tests in the same Specialty (Anatomy), in 2015, also at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon. During his career he had an intense Associative life, which he maintains, having been part of the Governing Bodies of the Portuguese Society of Stomatology and Dental Medicine (1983 - 1992, performing the duties of Member, Secretary, Vice-President and Director of the Portuguese Journal. Stomatology, Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Medicine); College of Stomatology Specialty (2001 - 2007, acting as Coordinator of the Southern Regional Section of the Stomatology College and Representative of Portuguese Stomatologists in the European Union of Medical Specialists - UEMS) and currently (2007 -) in the Portuguese Anatomical Society (SAP / AAP), where after acting as Secretary, Vice President and Director of Archives of Anatomy Magazine, he is the current President for the 2018/2020 biennium.

Member of several National and International Medical Scientific Societies, was elected in 2019 Counselor of the European Association of Clinical Anatomy (EACA) and in the same year (2019) was appointed delegate (1 of 2) representative of Portuguese Anatomists in the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA). He is a regular lecturer in international forums and author of several Medical book chapters. He has in his curriculum a large number of scientific articles published in indexed and impacting National and International Medical Journals. He is also the Referee of multiple Scientific Journals within his specialty and active participant by invitation, for the integration of Scientific Committees of juries and the awarding of science awards, table moderation, conferences, among others.

In 2019 he accepted the new challenge of providing the post of Professor of Anatomy of the Basic Cycle of Medicine at the University of Madeira, having made the provision on April 12, and promoting a proud action to create a structure based on the innovation of a Teaching. Vanguard doctor, in a young University that is affirming itself and in which it has bet and seeks to expand partnerships and to open horizons towards Modernity.
