Let's celebrate December and even as the year ends we leave the month with a great start.
Inaugurated on 16 December, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon is proud to open the doors of its most sophisticated new building, Reynaldo dos Santos. A pioneer and avant-garde simulation centre in Europe, Reynaldo dos Santos is the building that pays tribute to the man who left his mark on 20th Century Medicine.
Whereas it is easy to know Professor and Doctor Reynaldo, it is very unlikely that anyone knows that it was Reynaldo who lived in the ground floor villa near present-day Gulbenkian. “Abuito”, as her granddaughter Luz called him, comes alive today through a lullaby, a unique tribute written just for us.
Let's also celebrate the various Christmas events that happen thanks to our students. Instead of spending the entire day at home with their families, hundreds of students go to 22 different hospitals across the country to put a smile in those who cannot be at home for Christmas, making it a different Christmas which, after all, is meant to be equal and fairer for all.
As supportive as they were united, the students opened the doors to their Christmas dinner. We got to know the much-acclaimed Golden Harry and enjoyed the moment discreetly because the occasion is private and theirs.
Entering the universe of others is always a time of celebration, as we travel in time and remember how we once were, but better than that is when we can regain a more genuine and free side. The Institute of Molecular Medicine (iMM) went to Santa Maria Hospital’s Paediatrics Unit to train new small scientists. You don’t believe it? Seriously, after all, science is explained since childhood.
Both are named David. Both are entrepreneurs and medical students at FMUL. David Farinha brought a new project to the Faculty, Changemakers and David Campos took our Faculty overseas and won the best IMED pitch. Associated with both, there is Sónia Teixeira from the Office for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, who interviewed one David and helped the other with Changemakers.
We also celebrate Science, the one explained in 90 seconds to Antena 1 by our Professors Miguel Castanho and João Forjaz Lacerda and the one that is already 30 years old and every year is celebrated by the GAPIC and the AEFML on Research Day.
Our last toast of the month is no less important. It goes to the 65th Anniversary of the Northern Lisbon Hospital Centre. We remember the anniversary and our Director's speech.
And this is how we want to end the year, celebrating.
We wish you all an excellent 2020.
We promise to continue to celebrate the best that is done here.
See you next year!
