On October 18 and 19 2019, the Centennial Congress will take place at the Vilar Seminar in Porto, which aims to honour the oldest of the Scientific Societies of Medical Specialties in Portugal: The Portuguese Society of Stomatology and Dental Medicine (SPEMD).
To commemorate the anniversary of its 100th anniversary and to recall the remarkable actions of its contribution to the Society, both nationally and internationally, SPEMD decided to hold a commemorative session in honour of those who have distinguished themselves over the years serving the Institution, for the relevant services provided, including Professor Ivo Álvares Furtado, Full Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Life Sciences of the University of Madeira. There will be a conference given by Professor António de Vasconcelos Tavares, former President of SPEMD, who will speak on behalf of the honourees.
Professor Ivo Álvares Furtado, 67 years old, a native of Goa, obtained his medical degree at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon (1975). He has a long career in hospital activities at the Northern Lisbon University Hospital Centre (1976-2019) and in teaching Anatomy at the Institute of Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, where he currently works as a guest professor.
He obtained the Degree of Specialist in Stomatology with distinction in 1985 and the Degree of Stomatology Head of Service in 1992, having founded, in 1986, the Paediatric Stomatology Clinic of Santa Maria Hospital, where until recently (2019) he coordinated the Paediatric Stomatology Unit. He was Assistant at the Higher Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Lisbon (current Faculty of Medical Sciences) between 1976 and 1978, and belonged to the group of founding professors of the current Egas Moniz University Institute (Almada). He completed his Ph.D. in Medicine in the Anatomy Specialty with Distinction and Praise in 2008. In 2015, he successfully completed the Aggregation tests in the same Specialty (Anatomy) at in the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon.
He had an intense Associative life throughout his career, which he still maintains. He was part of the Governing Bodies of the Portuguese Society of Stomatology and Dental Medicine (1983-1992), where he held the position of Member and Secretary; Vice-President and Director of the Portuguese Journal of Stomatology, Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry; at the College of Stomatology Specialties (2001-2007), he served as Coordinator of the Southern Regional Section of the Stomatology College and was Representative of Portuguese Stomatologists at the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and currently (2007-) at the Portuguese Anatomical Society (SAP/AAP), where, after being the Secretary, Vice-President and Director of Archives of the Anatomy Magazine, he is the current President for the 2018/2020 biennium.
Member of several national and international Medical Scientific Societies, besides being elected Counsellor of the European Association of Clinical Anatomy (EACA) in 2019, he was also appointed delegate (1 of 2) representative of Portuguese anatomists in the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA). He is a regular lecturer in international forums and author of several medical book chapters. His curriculum includes a large number of scientific articles published in indexed and impacting national and international medical journals. He is also a referee of multiple Scientific Journals within his specialty and is often invited to be part of scientific committees of panels and science awards, table moderation and conferences, among others.
On 12 April 2019 he accepted the new challenge of becoming Full Professor of Anatomy of the Basic Cycle of Medicine at the University of Madeira. He promoted the creation of a structure based on the innovation of a vanguard medical education, in a young University that is affirming itself and to which he committed himself to broaden partnerships and open horizons towards modernity.
