On 6 September, the Medical degree of the University of Science and Technology of Macao began. MUST, the University’s acronym, had a very special presence, the Director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, Professor Fausto J. Pinto, who participated in the launching of the official ceremonies of the new University.
This visit follows a memorandum of understanding signed two years ago between Macao and Portugal, which established a student, lecturer and researcher mobility programme, and a joint synergy of research projects could later be created between the two institutions.
Fausto J. Pinto, who will be a faculty member at the University of Macao, referred to his role as “one of the highlights of his academic life, making a commitment on behalf of the University of Lisbon to provide all the conditions to promote, consolidate and develop the new degree”. The most important words were kept for the students: “You have chosen the most beautiful profession in the world, this is one of the best ways to live life, it will be tough and not always easy, but at the same time it is the most rewarding profession. Never forget the value of generosity, knowing how to care for sick people, and although they are just like you, many are in delicate situations. Bear in mind that ethical behaviour is the basic principle governing medicine and the life of a physician. Humanity is the beauty of medicine”.
Fausto J. Pinto was also present at the Sino Luso Forum on medical education, taking advantage of his presence in Macao. In response to these intense days of excitement and responsibility, the Director said “I am very honoured to have attended the opening of the first medical school in Macao as well as to be part of the faculty at the Sino Luso forum. Great atmosphere and certainly another example of how to move on the medical academy. In this case with a very special flavour, taking into account the historical relations between Portugal and Macao”.
