YES Meeting 2009
The YES Meeting, a captivating condensing of Young European Scientist Meeting, held its fourth edition last September in the city of Oporto.
After three editions of unanimous success, YES is back, bringing everything it has always represented to Oporto, “the unconquered city”: young people, several different nationalities, debates on current issues and social activities, setting them perfectly well within the unmistakable and unique academic and social spirit of the city of Oporto.
This annual event brings together students from several different degree course to discuss science, and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) was, as is now usual, represented by students from the second to the sixth year.
The standards of excellence to which we have become accustomed at this congress organized by students from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oporto was upheld, even with innovations in terms of subjects and activities.
The “scientific programme” included three components: Talks, Presentations of Scientific Works by students, and Workshops. Firstly it was possible to hear experts in such current and relevant areas as: Obesity, Reproductive Medicine, Contemporary Techniques in Surgery and Biomaterials; secondly, the participants had the opportunity to participate in one of three workshops: Basic Life Support, Laparoscopy or Forensic Medicine. Besides all this, YES promotes the divulging of scientific research Works carried out by students in several different areas; this year the following areas were represented: Oncology, Medicine/Physiology and Neurosciences. These works could be presented in the Oral Communications session or as a Poster.
This year, unlike last year, our faculty was represented in both sessions. In the Oral Communications session, Bernardo Moura (6th Year) presented the work he carried out in the area of Neurosciences, doing so in a succinct manner and thanking the jury and the audience present. In the Poster session, David Sousa (3rd Year) presented the Project he has been developing: “The role of lipidic membranes in the formation of viral particles of the Dengue virus”.

Here, and speaking on a personal level, I once again stress the importance of these opportunities for students to publicise their research to the scientific community, recommending everyone to take advantage of it if they are interested in research, for the rewards both on a personal and academic level. Finally, I should present my thanks: to YES (congratulating it at the same time), for giving students this opportunity; to the Institute of Biochemistry, for the conditions it grants me and the FMUL students present (António Oliveira, Filipe Rodrigues, João Cabral, Joana Matos Branco and Joana Neves), for their incentive.
The fundamental “social programme”, that intelligently complements the scientific component, adds indispensable culture and fun to these three days of dedication to science. Thus there are two dinner-get togethers: the first, on Saturday, with a performance by the Medicine Academic Student Band, and on Sunday, the gala dinner, where prizes are awarded to the best presentations. Unfortunately we were not present on the Sunday because we had to go to vote in the Portuguese local elections, but I am certain it went exceptionally well, indeed, like the whole congress. In addition, we had the chance to go to visit the Port Wine cellars and take a boat ride on the River Douro in a traditional Rebelo barge. Finally, in these three days there is still room for getting to know the famous Oporto nightlife and everything good about it!
This type of initiative, supported by their usual quality and organization are what allows the evolution of science, the divulging of inter-university knowledge, the creating of a worldwide network with a common interest in research and in biomedical sciences, mixing together culture, science, knowledge and socialisation.
Congratulations to the FMUP, and to science. See you next year!
