In Praise of
The Academic Services and the Treasury hereby publicly make praise of the Honourable Secretary Coordinator, Dr. David João Varela Xavier, at a time that is a mixture of joy and sadness, given the notice of the end of his mandate. Joy, because we know that he is going to a place that will afford him new challenges and possibilities of Professional promotion; sadness because he leaves a gap that will be very difficult to fill.
A secretary who demonstrated solid and balanced leadership, and brought us aims that had long been needed in these areas, aims which he not only proposed but was an integral part in making them come about; who brought swift solutions and different practical measures to the several different problems that emerged in these areas, smoothing out and computerising several procedures that needed these urgent measures; bringing a new view, with strategies and results that we see as successful; who brought the impulse necessary to continue to work towards this end, doing better if possible, changing if necessary; who brought the recognition of our value and motivating us to continue; that brought the patience of listening to us whenever anything went wrong, whether for professional or personal issues; who brought an unequalled camaraderie among staff members and bosses which is unusual, providing good humour and a good working environment; who brought a difficult farewell to us, a longing that will remain in the air, a loyalty and friendship that he will receive from everyone; he brought us, indeed, the privilege of being our Coordinating Secretary.
Due to his commitment and that which has been a positive result for the image of these Services, and of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon in general, it is of the fullest and most elementary justice to grant you this public and humble praise.
