Project #136
From a partnership between various regional entities from Alto Alentejo: Portalegre Polytechnic Institute, Professor Francisco Pulido Valente Foundation, MORE PARTICIPATION - better health Project, Portalegrense Workers Cooperative, TEGUA Regional Development Association and Tejo Guadiana, Hotel Industry and Tourism School of Portalegre and the Healthy Eating Project in Portalegre County Schools - in particular the municipalities of Portalegre, Campo Maior and Elvas, arose the FRESH FOOD AT WORK proposal. From the over 1400 applications, it is among the 700 that went on to the voting phase of Portugal's Participatory Budgeting (OPP2018).
This is the only proposal in the Health sector exclusively geared to the Alto Alentejo population.
Food is a key element in promoting health and preventing disease. In a region such as Alto Alentejo, where cuisine plays such an important role, both culturally for those who reside there and those who visit. The quality of what is produced and consumed is of greater importance.
FRESH FRUIT AT WORK is a proposal that arises from those who live and work in the region, as way of contributing toward improving eating habits of the local working population. Geared to those who commute daily without thinking of what they will eat throughout the day, FRESH FRUIT AT WORK wants to provide a way to facilitate access to fruit and vegetables from local producers, free of chemicals and in season. Rather than prohibiting packaged and unhealthy products in public spaces, we want to activate and strengthen local production, create better eating habits, defend local production and, above all, promote healthy habits for all.
Eating fruit and vegetables reduces the consumption of meat and ultimately contributes to valuing a greater circular development with less energy consumption and a smaller environmental footprint (emission and pollution reduction on the planet).
For all the above reasons, we present FRESH FRUIT AT WORK, which is, until September 30th, open for voting under the OPP2018 programme.
