Professional Opportunities Seminar
The Lisbon Faculty of Medicine Students’ Association (AEFML) organised the VIII Professional Opportunities Seminar on the 15th and 16th of April 2009 in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL).
The aim of this seminar was to carry out a general approach to some of the areas and specialties in medicine, creating a space for the clarifying of students’ doubts in relation to its reality and fields of action. It simultaneously intended to inform and alert medical students towards the main problems facing young doctors. Although it has a tradition, this event had not been held since 2002. Taking into account the relevance of the subject, the management team of the AEFML made organising this event a priority.
The forums into which the areas/specialties dealt with and their respective speakers were grouped were:
15th
Medical Careers
• Teaching Career – Professor Maria Carmo Fonseca
• Research Career - Professor António Vaz Carneiro
• Pharmaceutical Industry - Dr Isabel Fonseca Santos
The Doctor and the Community
• International Medical Assistance (AMI) - Dr Fátima Ferreira
• Public Health - Dr Rosa Freitas
• General and Family Medicine - Dr Tiago Villanueva
Diagnostic Tools in Medicine
• Radiology - Dr João Leitão
• Pathological Anatomy - Dr Rafael Adame Cabrera
16th
Medical Specialties
• Internal Medicine - Dr Rita Marçal
• Cardiology - Dr Pedro Carrilho Ferreira
• Paediatrics - Dr Marta Pinto
• Psychiatry - Dr Manuela Silva
Surgical Specialties
• General Surgery - Dr Vítor Rocha
• Plastic Surgery - Dr Tiago Baptista Fernandes
Medical-Surgical Specialties
• Gynaecology and obstetrics - Dr Carlos Veríssimo
• Orthopaedics - Dr Daniel Sá da Costa
Each talk lasted approximately twenty minutes. Most of the talks followed the topics proposed by the organising committee, such as:
• Introduction to the area;
• The country’s needs in this area;
• Limits and relations with other specialties;
• Most common clinical practices/techniques;
• Course during the Complementary Internship period (length, assessment);
• Work in the public field v. private;
• Most positive/negative aspects in the field;
• Daily life / free time / family life;
• Most striking episode in their career.
The structured organisation of the presentations made it easy to meet the aims of the seminar, responding to the majority of the questions facing medicine students. Besides the structuring of the presentations, one should highlight the interest and dynamics shown by the speakers, who in general captivated the attention and interest of those present.
Each of the above forums was followed by a period open to questions from the participating students, often leading to a debate between the invited doctors and the students, which we considered to be very productive.
Participation in the seminar on the part of the FMUL students was very significant, and included about 280 students. These students were very interested in the talks delivered and in the debates/questions periods. According to some opinions by both students and speakers, the organising committee for the seminar considers this to be rather productive, and hopes that the initiative will carry on.
We hereby take this opportunity to once again thank all the doctors who accepted our invitation, the Faculty, for the space it provided, Bayer and all those who worked to make the seminar possible.
