The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon PhD Programme is organised jointly with the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) and with the Santa Maria Hospital (HSM), integrated within the North Lisbon Hospital Centre (CHLN) and covers three areas:

• Biomedical Sciences
• Medicine
• Health Sciences and Technology

Its main aims are:

• To promote higher qualification of PhD students in the different areas mentioned
• To guarantee efficient coordination with the previously registered actions and programmes:
- Programme of Advanced Medical Training organised by the IMM
- PhD in Neurosciences
- PhD in Metabolic Diseases and Dietary Behaviour, organised by the University Clinic of Endocrinology
- PhD in Emerging Infectious Diseases (awaiting approval at the General Directorate of Higher Education)
- Others in preparation
• To guarantee efficient coordination of the existing PhD programmes.
• To promote interdisciplinarity in scientific research, reinforcing cooperation between the institutions that make up the Lisbon Academic Medicine Centre (CAML).
• To reinforce inter-institutional collaboration in the University of Lisbon and with other Portuguese and foreign partners.
• To develop the academic dimension in Clinical Medicine, namely with the PhD programmes for interns.
