António José Gonçalves Ferreira, Full Professor of anatomy and neuroanatomy, Director of the Institute of Anatomy and the Neurosurgery University Clinic of FMUL and Head of the Neurosurgery Service at Hospital Santa Maria – North Lisbon Hospital Centre responsible for the Functional Neurosurgery sector, has had an important role in many international institutions that are a part of his main areas of professional activity:
In 2013, during the XII European Joint Congress of Clinical Anatomy organised at FMUL, he was elected President of the European Association of Clinical Anatomy (EACA) for 2013-2015. EACE is the most important anatomical association in Europe and publishes the Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy journal.
On September 19th 2013, during the XXI Congress of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ESSFN), which took place in Maastricht, Holland, Professor Ferreira was also elected Vice-President of ESSFN for the years 2014-16. The ESSFN XX Congress was organised by him in Lisbon. Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery is the area which has developed the most in neurosurgery worldwide and the ESSFN is, next to the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), the most important European and international society in this professional field.
