Editorial Note
Life beyond football
Before a short holiday break in this hesitant summer, issue 42 of the Newsletter reports on how life in the medical academic community has been over recent weeks, in what seems to be a much more entertaining and lively period than that experienced by football fans.
This issue of the Newsletter evokes Professor Lobo Antunes’s final lecture “Life under Examination” where he gave an overview of his academic, scientific, cultural, and political activities. His lecture was attended by the current and two former Presidents of the Portuguese Republic as well as by several personalities from the Portuguese cultural and scientific arenas, ample proof of the immense prestige accorded to Professor Lobo Antunes. In the News/Profiles section we post an interview with Professor Lobo Antunes on the activity of the FMUL Neurosurgery University Clinic.
In the Events section, we talk about the Tribute paid to Professor Barbas, Head of the FMUL Nephrology University Clinic, held on June 20th in the Grand Auditorium of the FMUL, which was attended by renowned nephrologists in Portugal.
We also report on the inauguration ceremony of the new FMUL Students Union governing body (AEFML), which took place on June 12; and on two other events that bring the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Research (CEMBE) to the forefront, i.e. the launching ceremony of the Portuguese Branch of the Iberoamerican Cochrane Centre, on June 24, and the Collaboration Agreement signed between CEMBE and the Angolan Medical Association.
Finally, we also report on the European Peptide Society Award conferred to the FMUL Deputy Dean, Professor Castanho. Last but not least, this issue also features one of the most prominent researchers in Portugal, Maria Mota (IMM-FMUL), winner of the 2013 Pessoa Award, who leaves a word of warning for political decision-makers regarding the sponsoring of science.
Enjoy your read and have a happy summer!
