Welcome to the medical degree of the largest university in the country.
“I have joined medical school, now what?” Now what one needs to do is be aware of the new responsibilities and enjoy a new intellectually rich, culturally diverse and scientifically complete environment, which is equally socially appealing. Like others, FMUL new students will find it strange at first, and then embrace the situation.
FMUL is proud to have some of the better educated and collectively organized students in the country, with the AEFML (Student Association of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon) standing out as an example of promoting culture, science and debate of medical issues. It is equally proud of having recently conducted a bold curriculum reform that converted a classical structure in an integrated modular education. This restructuring was pioneer in Portugal and placed FMUL at the forefront of medical education internationally.
This academic year, in particular, is special and unique because it is the one in which the new students will inaugurate the first year of the medical degree of the University of Lisbon that resulted from the merger of the former Technical University of Lisbon and the former University of Lisbon, making it the largest university in the country and the one with greater international impact.
More than anything else, joining FMUL means being part of a community that is concerned and committed to education and medicine. The new students have just entered a world that is undoubtedly attractive, yet not an easy world. Incidentally, our own nature tells us that undemanding challenges are hardly appealing. We hope that in the face of adversity, our students do not expect it to be easy, and are able to rise well above the difficulties. This is what society expects of us. And this is what we must do.
Welcome to this journey!

Welcome to the medical degree of the largest university in the country.
Some moments in life become landmarks due to the changes associated with them. They are almost a “shuffling and starting again” and everything seems to fit in a new phase. Starting a university degree appears to be like that, the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new life. In fact, although this feeling is exaggerated, it is an important event and everyone remembers the beginning of his/her degree: a new setting, new people new routines, new individual expectations, new expectations from others, new responsibilities, new challenges, new frontiers. With FMUL medical students it is no different.
