Education through Science - First steps in research
Programme “Education through Science”
Through its successful and innovative “Education through Science” programme launched in 1997, GAPIC has been encouraging the supervised practice of scientific research by young undergraduate students of the Integrated Master Degree in Medicine (CMIM) of FMUL.
The “Education through Science” programme has enabled young medical students in years 2-6 of the degree to go through the various stages of a science educational process under supervision. This process requires students to carry out a scientific project based on an original hypothesis, submit it to GAPIC for funding (dependent on peer review), conduct it under supervision at a unit of the FMUL, IMM, or HSM, present the results at the annual “Education through Science! Workshop (before a panel external to GAPIC) and finally write a report in the form of a scientific article (evaluated by the GAPIC team).
In the sixteen editions of this programme, 348 projects have been approved out of the 389 applications received, involving about 496 students.
Chart – Evolution of the Number of Projects, Students and Research Units
Chronological Analysis 1997-2012
From the 11th edition (2007/2008) onwards, the number of projects, students and research units involved has increased, and this trend has remained unchanged.
In the current academic year (2012/2013) it has been possible to increase the number of funded research projects for students through the award of additional grants, and to foster the internationalization and mobility aspects of the programme through the Gulbenkian/FMUL Scholarships funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
