AIMS Meeting
It is with utmost pleasure that the Organizing Committee of the AIMS Meeting (Annual International Medical Students Meeting) presents the first edition of this initiative made by students for students! This year, as in previous editions, there will be talks, workshops, students’ presentations of their research findings, and several innovative activities that aim to provide a truly enriching experience for participants, both in academic and scientific terms and from an individual perspective.
The project started over four years ago under the name ENJOY Med and it has since grown, thanks to the dedication of colleagues such as José Carlos Mendes, Edgar Moreira, António Caetano, and António Carvalho, among many others, fulfilling the goal of creating a space for learning, interaction and communication in science, embodied in a congress of medical students for their peers.
The present edition will take place on 15, 16, and 17 March at FMUL and will be attended by national and international students and guests. It will address topics as diverse as Regenerative Medicine, Perinatal Care and Advances in Surgery. Among the guests, who are professionals of renowned quality in their various lines of work, the following stand out: Miguel Mano, Pedro Baptista, Lino Ferreira, André Graça, Nikk Conneman, Óscar Dias, Ângelo Nobre, Kris Maes, Ryan Orosco, Rui Vieira Nery, and Jonathan Howard, who will share their knowledge and experiences. Over the three days, participants will have the opportunity not only to attend lectures and participate in workshops, but also to meet doctors and researchers in an informal setting during the Speed Dating. Moreover, in this edition the Aims Meeting starts earlier with the pre-courses “How to Write a Successful CV” and “Saving Babies - a Practical How-To Course” on the afternoon of 14 March.
As our aim is also to instigate and promote scientific research projects conducted by students, after the call for abstracts of recent months, we selected projects to be presented as posters or oral presentations. The best will be awarded prizes worth 500€ and 250€, to enable students to continue their research projects or invest in their training.
Citing Abel Salazar “the doctor who only knows about medicine does not even know about medicine”, we also intend to foster dialogue among participating students and between the later and the reality around them. Accordingly, alongside the scientific programme, we have organized a social programme that will include guided tours to the Belém Cultural Centre, the Centre of Modern Art and the historical centre of Lisbon, and a social dinner. In addition, we will invite participants to collaborate with social solidarity associations in the distribution of food to the homeless.
The internationalization process of the congress started in the last edition and it involves a great deal of publicity and dissemination, but the increasing number of applications from foreign colleagues attests its success. In an attempt to bring together FMUL students and their foreign colleagues, the former can receive the latter in their homes through the recently created Homestay Programme, benefitting from unique cultural experiences and new friendships.
We are confident that all the work done by the Organizing Committee of the 4th AIMS Meeting (a team of 15 students from FMUL, ranging from year 1 to the Common Year and form Medicine to Health Sciences) and by all those supporting it, which started many months ago, will offer participants a unique and memorable experience. We are also aware that it is thanks to the involvement of the entire academic community that this project can be successfully implemented, for which reason we welcome all students and teachers of our house.
We very much hope that the 4th AIMS Meeting will be as successful as we planned it to be, in the belief that we have a role to play in the education of students like ourselves.
See you on 15, 16 and 17 March!
