Ceremony of the 100th Anniversary of the University of Lisbon
The roots of the University of Lisbon go back to the Estudo Geral (General Study), set up in Lisbon in 1288-1290 and subsequently moved to Coimbra. The founding of the Escola Médico-Cirurgica de Lisboa – Medical-Surgical School of Lisbon (1836), of the Escola Politecnica – Polytechnical School (1837) and of the Curso Superior de Letras – Higher Degree in Humanities (1859), formed the basis for the creation, or re-foundation, of the University of Lisbon by the Republican Regime, by decree of 22 March 1911. On 19 April of that year, those schools became the Faculties of Medicine, Sciences, and Humanities, which were later followed by the Law School and the Faculty of Pharmacy and, after the April 25 revolution, by the Faculties of Psychology, Educational Sciences, Social Sciences, Fine Arts, Dental Medicine and, more recently, Geography and Territorial Planning.
This is the history that is being celebrated in 2011, on occasion of the first centenary of the Republican decree, through a wide range of initiatives, available and which has had the support of all Faculties and Institutes, particularly those that, alongside the Faculty of Medicine, also celebrate their own centenary.
One of the high moments of these initiatives was the Ceremony of the 100 Years of the University of Lisbon, which was held at Aula Magna on 21 March. In the ceremony’s programme, the Rector Magnificus, Professor António Sampaio da Nóvoa, stated that ”The Ceremony of the 100 Years of the University of Lisbon is centred on its students and, above all, on what they have given and are prepared to give to society. We choose men and women from distinct generation, distinct fields of knowledge, whose actions have a strong impact on Portugal and on the world. Among so many others, they are examples of what the University of Lisbon is like. The Ceremony will be presided by His Excellency the President of Parliament, Dr. Jaime Gama, a former student at this University. Music and choirs will close a Ceremony presented by our former student José Nuno Martins:
• With Orlando Ribeiro, in this year of his Centenary, we evoke Social Sciences through the person who marked the way we think in Portugal.
• With the intervention of Carmo Fonseca, recently awarded the Pessoa Prize, we acknowledge the importance of science in the field of Health and its impact on society.
• With the award of the University of Lisbon Prize 2011 to Jorge Miranda, we distinguish an entire life dedicated to Law and public causes.
• With the reference to marine research, we illustrate the future of Science and Technology through the teams working in frontier areas of research and innovation in an international context.
• With the Honorary Doctorate conferred to António Lobo Antunes, a former student at the University of Lisbon, we honour, in the Arts and Humanities, our culture and its projection in the world.”
Before an Aula Magna full of illustrious guests, an immense university atrium with lecturers with PhDs from all faculties and institutes, packed with students, lecturers and non-academic staff, and a Table of Honour where His Excellency the President of Parliament, Dr. Jaime Gama, who presided over the Ceremony, the President of the General Council, Dr. Henrique Granadeiro, the President of the Alumni Association, Dr. Guilherme de Oliveira Martins, and the Rector Magnificus, Professor António Sampaio da Nóvoa, sat, the talks and works presented by José Nuno Martins followed the order established in the programme:
- Initial speeches by Dra. Maria Leal, Librarian, representing non-teaching staff, by student Tiago Gonçalves, President of AAUL, and by the Rector Magnificus, Professor António Sampaio da Nóvoa;
- Viewing of an abridged version of a documentary by Catarina Alves Costa about Professor Orlando Ribeiro, eminent Geographer and Humanist, whose centenary was celebrated on 16 February of the current year;
- Talk by Professor Carmo Fonseca, a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Executive Director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine, distinguished with the Pessoa Prize for her original contribution to scientific research, in the field of basic sciences and health;
- Award of the University of Lisbon Prize 2011 to Professor Jorge Miranda, Full Professor at the School of Law, for his national and international academic career in the area of Law, namely Constitutional Law, followed by a speech by Professor Miranda;
- viewing of the work by Rogério Taveira on “Marine Sciences at the University of Lisbon”.
- Award of the Honorary Doctorate by the University of Lisbon to writer António Lobo Antunes for his work in the field of literature, followed by an Elogium by Professor José Barata-Moura (Rector between 1998 and 2006), and by a brief speech by António Lobo Antunes.
- The session was ended by His Excellency the President of Parliament, Dr. Jaime Gama.
The Choir of the University of Lisbon, the Children Choir of the University of Lisbon, the Quinteto de Metais, and the Choir of the University of Évora acted at distinct times during the ceremony, which ended with an academic cortege at the sound of the anthem Gaudeamus Igitur played by the Lisbon Brass Orchestra, and sang by the choirs of the University of Lisbon and of the University of Évora.
As the Rector Magnificus, Professor António Sampaio da Nóvoa stated in the ceremony programme, this session showed that “the university is made of presences, histories and purposes. The people make up the university. What we are is very important. However, more important is what we do with what we are, and our commitment to others and to society.”
