António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches (Penamacor, 1699 – Paris, 1783) was a Portuguese doctor, humanist, pedagogue and philosopher, and one of the leading names in the intellectual culture of the Enlightenment.
Born into a family of New Christians, he identified himself as a Jew and practiced Jewish rites in secret. His whole life was marked by religious persecution and a cultural environment strongly conditioned by inquisitorial censorship.
Invited by Diderot and D'Alembert to collaborate in the founding work of Encyclopedism, he was a doctor at the Russian court of Catherine II, recommended by Hermann Boerhaave, one of the greatest doctors of his time. These facts attest his prestige.
Much of his work has a pedagogical nature and the Marquis of Pombal himself asked him to be involved in the reform of education in Portugal.
He left a vast correspondence with some of the most prominent names in the culture of his time, even though his name is mentioned only briefly in various writings on the Enlightenment.
