They answered to the call promptly and did not hesitate to accept the invitation which, in addition to being a challenge, became a serious commitment that resulted in an essential collaboration with the work of the Communication Office of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
When we all found ourselves faced with the reality of restructuring the traditional Welcoming Week for new students, thinking of a way to welcome them into FMUL in an appealing, empathetic and irreverent way, while simultaneously complying with the safety and hygiene rules currently in force due to the pandemic, many ideas and goodwill came up, including from the students, who understand and value the importance of having someone who shows us and guides us around in a new way.
The question was: how can we receive new students and show them everything we have and are, without being in direct contact, without physical presence in the usual way? Well, an interesting moment of brainstorming ensued, followed by some meetings via Zoom and many messages in the WhatsApp group created for that purpose, which showed the enthusiasm and willpower to collaborate, with a view to offering a different communication that was forced to reinvent itself in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic.
So, the alternative was to transpose a physical reality into the virtual world and it was then that we gave shape to ideas, colour and sound to a communication project in the digital world.
So the traditional (physical) guided visit to the Faculties and all corners became a virtual visit, in which our AEFML students took on the role of actors, directors, and editors of a promotional video, aimed at welcoming new colleagues coming for the first time, starting a new phase of their lives in a new home that they, our most experienced students, already know so well.
The script finalized, written by the Communication Office and last revised by the students, as after all it was them who gave it body and voice, we were ready to start recording.
D-day arrived and punctuality was noticed in those two intense mornings at work (in which the sun and the mild temperature were allies in the outdoor recordings). The event will certainly remain in everyone's memory, due to the exceptionality of those fragments of time that we shared.
Upon entering the AEFML room, the meeting point we had previously arranged, I find Luís Soeiro, a year 5 medical student, finishing details and making last minute changes in the script, checking the camera, tripod and microphone while the then President of the AEFML, José Rodrigues, assumed the logistical responsibility for the arrival of the remaining team, which was not long in arriving. Our Mentors literally put on their shirts and we finally went out into the street, nervous, but excited to get our hands on and do our best.
And so it was. With a strong spirit of mutual assistance, a lot of commitment and dedication, our students were exceptionally responsible in the performance of their roles. Thanks to their collaboration, the Communication Office managed to materialize yet another idea that consolidates the image and communication of a reference institution as the FMUL, allying itself with the force that moves a well-oiled machine, composed of many and complex parts, but which moves in exemplary gear.
To Amilton, Joana and Alexandre, year 2 medical students, my huge and sincere thanks for the availability and collaboration; to our Mentors João and Madalena, my thanks for their generous help and proactivity; also to Luís Soeiro, who kindly provided the material and assured all the technical questions of this project; and to José Rodrigues, diligent mediator, my immense gratitude for his commitment, dedication and loyalty. From start to finish, from script to production, from recording to post-production, they were tireless.
I wish you all the best and a lot of success. The success belongs to the winners and you already are winners. So, stay firm and complete on your way and claim your prize, because we will be here to applaud and share the joy of your victory.
Until then, see you around. And we continue together, consolidating this new World for the future, in one place!
