The recent and expected news regarding the intention to close Schools and Universities launched yet another challenge to adapt quickly and appropriately to the functioning of the institutions. In the particular case of medical education, and specifically with regard to the clinical cycles, the Council of Portuguese Medical Schools (CEMP), finds it crucial that face-to-face activities are maintained, within the particular conditions and reality of each Faculty and corresponding affiliated health units.

In fact, the maintenance of training in a hospital environment has the enormous potential to be a unique asset in the academic, professional and personal training of future doctors, who not only have an exceptional training opportunity in this public health situation that several generations have not had the chance to experience, as well as the prospect, properly framed in the previous training that they have already had, to participate actively, with the mission spirit that characterizes the medical profession, in combating a pandemic that has challenged health systems and their professionals around the world.

The Portuguese Medical Schools are fully available and motivated to actively participate in this fight, for which reason they will continue to create all the necessary conditions for a safe participation adapted to the level that their students are in regarding training and tutored intervention. To this end, they will continue to seek to ensure, with the country's political and sanitary authorities, that medical students attending the clinical cycle can benefit from the protective measures that are proposed for all health professionals, namely with regard to the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine.

We believe that maintaining clinical cycles will be a formative, humanistic and solidary act that will contribute to the country's health.

Count on us.
