Cardiovascular Rehabilitation

Cardiovascular rehabilitation allows, as a secondary prevention strategy, recovering a patient after an acute cardiovascular event, as a whole and in a multidisciplinary way. This process reduces disability, allowing early return to work and postponing retirement. It improves the quality and quantity of life and reduces the negative psychological effects and new events, which are more serious due to the repetition and continuation of the disease progression.

In a previous phase, no less important and in continuity with secondary prevention, primary prevention should also be considered a priority for investment in health.

In the context of Medicine as a whole, research and clinical practice jointly integrate scientific knowledge and its implementation. The clinic is based on scientifically proven results, involving pathophysiological mechanisms and the effects of therapeutic interventions. On the other hand, the assistance activity supports clinical research, allowing to question established assumptions and reach new conclusions.

The University of Lisbon, together with Santa Maria Hospital, has the ideal and necessary conditions for the construction of a large, innovative project, bringing together the clinical and research aspects, allowing the provision of a service to patients and the population in general with important consequences in terms of health promotion and cardiovascular disease prevention.

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon is a pioneer in the country regarding the offer of a Master in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation, contributing to the excellence of professional specificity and scientific research in this area.
