Amortality

Maria do Carmo Fonseca is the speaker of the next FMUL Talk. She is a Professor at the Lisbon School of Medicine in Cell Biology and Oncobiology, she is the President of iMM as well as one of its main Research Leaders. First woman to receive the Pessoa Prize, she also received the Gulbenkian Science Prize and was awarded the Order of Sant'iago de Espada Ilustre Carreira.

One of his last major research works was on the discovery of a ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecule, a very particular molecule that, when manipulated, not only stops aging, but also causes old cells to behave like new ones.

But what is the consequence of this great step? Can we become amoral?

“Today we live longer and in the near future it is expected that our average life expectancy will continue to increase. This reality led the World Health Organization to review at what age we should consider ourselves old. According to the current classification, people remain young up to 65! At 66 you enter middle age and only after 80 do we reach old age. It's great to be 60 and still feel young, but is it still possible to feel young at 80? To designate the idea of living more years without aging, the writer Catherine Mayer created the word “amortality” ( . Carmo-Fonseca believes in this concept and tells us that “it remains to be able to reverse cellular aging in the human body. For that, we will only have to wait some time (maybe another 50 or 100 years)“.

Have you asked yourself enough about this topic? Without absolute truths, or answers already established, put yourself to the test.

Want to know how to participate in Fmul talks? It's simple, to subscribe just send an email to webinar@medicina.ulisboa.pt and wait for confirmation. From home, or from work, via your phone, or your computer, wherever you are, join your side by ours.

At the end of this talk, you will be challenged to participate, ask questions, or simply comment on the proposed topic. And you can do it by going live, or just sending a message. You can just subscribe and listen, without having to actively participate.

More or less exposed, more or less "provoked", participate!

Because we want to create an increasingly open communication space, the more spread out we walk, the more together we can stay.

5th February at 6pm Carmo-Fonseca talks about how to "take a look at amortality".

See you soon!
