The AIMS Meeting, organized by a committee of FMUL students, took place on 18-21 March and was attended by almost 1300 participants. It consisted of multidisciplinary lectures, debates and workshops. For the first time, and due to the covid-19 pandemic, the conference took place online, in a technological platform.
Among the great names of Medicine and Science, Jules Hoffmann was one of the main orators and the first speaker. One of the 2011 Nobel Prize laureates in medicine, Jules Hoffmann is known for his discoveries about the activation of innate immunity.
Andrew Pelling, a Canadian biologist, also participated in this congress. Using asparagus, Andrew Pelling made a natural spinal cord implant and managed to restore movement in a paralyzed mouse: the experiment was shown in a video at one of the conferences.
Guilherme Vilhais, one of the coordinators of the AIMS organizing committee, explained to TSF that the objective of this congress is to inspire by example. He stated that, “the world, medicine and science already had problems before this pandemic. They continue and will continue when the pandemic is over. Therefore, we cannot forget and ignore them completely”.
This is one of the great events of the year. You can follow it in more detail on the official website!
