Ceremony of Granting the Insignias of Honoris Causa Doctor by the University of Lisbon
On the 21st of January last, in the Aula Magna of the Chancellory of the University of Lisbon, the Ceremony of the Granting of the Insignias of Honoris Causa Doctor was held for DoctorsHans Ulrich Gumbrecht, Albert Guerard Professor of Literature at Stanford University, Maria Helena da Rocha Pereira, Retired Professor of Classical Culture at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, Sir Peter Robert Frank Bell, Emeritus Professor in Surgery at the University of Leicester, UK, and Mark Savickas, Professor and Director of the Behavioral Sciences Department at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
In the words of the Chancellor of the University of Lisbon, in these four personalities “(…) we applaud what there is of the best in the university: dedication to the training of new generations, the spirit of discovery and of scientific creation and participation in social progress. In them we recognise three words [generosity, altruism and truth] which have perhaps fallen into disuse, but the reality of things obliges us to rediscover, knowing that without them there is no university, nor science nor culture.”
The FMUL was represented at the highest level in this ceremony, with Professor Sir Peter Robert Frank Bell, “(…) a figure of great scientific and professional prestige and whose action was determining for the progress of the medicine and the surgery of diseases of the vascular system.”, having been sponsored by Professor Fernandes e Fernandes, Director of the FMUL.
