In the field of cardiovascular diseases, the project coordinated by Professor Maria do Carmo Fonseca (President and researcher at iMM), in partnership with the Association of the Higher Technical Institute for Research (IST) and Development and the Association for Research and Development of the Lisbon School of Medicine (AIDFM), aims to improve the genetic diagnosis in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, an inherited cardiovascular disease that is the most common cause of sudden death. The amount attributed, of 987 thousand euros, is intended to develop and improve existing therapies, with the main focus on the genetic cause.

In turn, Professor Luísa Figueiredo, and iMM researcher in the field of infectious diseases, is also awarded with approximately 500 thousand euros, which will be allocated to the investigation of a new mechanism of the sleeping sickness parasite, African human trypanosomiasis - an infection caused by parasites transmitted through the bite of the tsetse fly.
